Confirm the symptom

First decide whether the key never responds, works intermittently, or produces the wrong character. A wrong character often points to the selected keyboard layout or remapping. Intermittent input is more consistent with a connection, contamination, or switch problem than a consistently reassigned key.

Run a controlled browser check

  1. Open the Keyboard Check Lab tester and start a new test.
  2. Press the suspect key once, then press the same key position on a known-good keyboard if one is available.
  3. Check the standardized code rather than only the displayed character. The code describes a physical position; the character can change with the active layout.
  4. Repeat in a private browser window or another browser with extensions disabled.
  5. Avoid operating-system and browser shortcuts. Reserved combinations may never reach the page.

Compare outside the browser

Try the key in a plain text editor, the operating system’s keyboard settings, and another application. For a letter or number key, also test before logging in if your system provides an accessible input field. A key that fails everywhere is stronger hardware or firmware evidence than a key that fails only on one webpage.

Change one variable at a time

  1. Confirm the expected language and keyboard layout.
  2. Pause remapping, macro, accessibility, and gaming-profile software, recording the original settings first.
  3. Reconnect the keyboard directly, try another data-capable cable or port, and charge a wireless keyboard.
  4. Follow the manufacturer’s reset and firmware instructions for the exact model.
  5. Test the keyboard on another computer, or test another keyboard on the same computer.

Inspect without causing damage

Disconnect power before cleaning. Look for visible debris and compare the key’s travel with neighbouring keys. Do not pry off laptop, scissor-switch, or low-profile keycaps without model-specific instructions; small retaining clips can break. Liquid exposure, heat, swelling, or a burning smell calls for immediate disconnection and professional service.

What the test cannot prove: a browser cannot inspect switch contacts, the keyboard matrix, wireless packets, or USB electronics. Save the report as supporting evidence, then reproduce the failure elsewhere.
