Start with hot-swap support

A hot-swappable keyboard has sockets designed for switch removal without soldering. A soldered mechanical keyboard can still use replaceable switches, but removal requires suitable tools and repair skill. Pulling a soldered switch can damage the PCB, plate, or pads.

Match the sensing technology

Mechanical contact
Uses metal contacts inside the switch. Many MX-style hot-swap boards support several brands, but the footprint still needs checking.
Optical
Uses a light-based sensing system. Optical switches are not automatically interchangeable with contact switches—or even with another optical platform.
Hall effect
Uses magnetic sensing. Compatibility depends on the keyboard’s sensor design, firmware, magnet position, and supported switch list.
Low profile
Uses a shorter housing and often a distinct footprint or keycap mount. Standard-height switches generally do not fit.

Check the physical footprint

For MX-style contact switches, compare three-pin and five-pin housings. Five-pin switches add two plastic alignment posts; some three-pin plates or PCBs do not have holes for them. Clipping posts is irreversible and should not replace checking the keyboard manufacturer’s supported-switch list.

Check plate, LED, and orientation clearance

The top housing must fit the plate opening, and the lower housing must clear the PCB and socket. Surface-mounted LEDs, north- or south-facing orientation, switch films, and unusually thick housings can affect fit or keycap clearance. Do not force a switch that will not sit flat.

Check the keycap mount

Many standard mechanical switches use an MX-style cross stem, but that alone does not prove electrical or physical compatibility. Low-profile and proprietary systems may use different stems, stabilizers, or keycap spacing. Large keys also depend on the keyboard’s stabilizer design.

Use a pre-purchase checklist

  1. Record the complete keyboard model, revision, layout, and connection mode.
  2. Confirm whether the PCB is hot-swappable or soldered.
  3. Find the manufacturer’s supported switch technology and model list.
  4. Compare footprint, pin count, total height, plate support, LED clearance, and keycap stem.
  5. Buy a small sample before a full set when documentation is incomplete.
  6. Disconnect the keyboard and support the socket from behind if the manufacturer’s service instructions require it.
Do not infer compatibility from appearance: two switches can share a cross-shaped stem and similar housing while using incompatible pins, sensors, magnets, or dimensions.
